Diploma Engineering Admissions 2026: Over 3,500 Government Seats Still Vacant After Three Rounds

A large number of seats in government diploma engineering colleges in Gujarat remain vacant even after three rounds of admissions, highlighting the continuing challenge of attracting students to diploma-level technical education.

According to a recent report, more than 3,500 government diploma engineering seats were still vacant after three admission rounds. The situation has prompted authorities to consider additional rounds of counselling to improve enrolment.

Government Diploma Seats Remain Unfilled

The vacancies are particularly significant because government and grant-in-aid institutions provide relatively affordable technical education compared with many private institutions. Despite this advantage, student demand has not been sufficient to fill all available seats.

The Admission Committee for Professional Diploma Courses (ACPDC) has continued to publish vacancy information and admission-related updates through its official portal.

Why Are Diploma Engineering Seats Going Vacant?

The persistent vacancies raise questions about changing student preferences and the attractiveness of diploma-level engineering programmes.

Some possible factors include:

  • Increasing preference for Class 12 followed by degree-level engineering
  • Greater competition from alternative professional and vocational courses
  • Concerns about employment and career progression after a diploma
  • Preference among students for private or degree-level institutions
  • Limited awareness of diploma courses and opportunities for lateral entry into degree programmes

The issue is significant because a diploma can provide students with an early technical qualification and can also serve as a pathway towards a bachelor’s degree through lateral entry.

More Admission Rounds Expected

With thousands of seats still available, Gujarat authorities are expected to conduct additional rounds of admissions to give eligible candidates another opportunity to secure a government diploma engineering seat.

Candidates interested in vacant seats should therefore regularly check the official ACPDC portal for announcements regarding registration, choice filling, seat allotment and reporting.

Check Vacant Seats and Admission Updates

The official ACPC portal has published government/government-aided engineering vacant-seat information, along with institute-wise vacancy details and other admission notices.

What Students Should Do

Students who have not yet secured admission should check the latest vacancy list and eligibility requirements before participating in any further round. They should also compare branch, college location, fees, infrastructure, placement opportunities and prospects for lateral entry into degree engineering before locking their choices.

The large number of vacant seats after multiple rounds also highlights a broader issue for policymakers: merely increasing technical education capacity may not be enough. Diploma programmes need to be aligned more closely with emerging industry requirements, employability and students’ career aspirations.
