UPSC Prelims 2026 Cut-Off May Hit Record Low After Toughest Paper in Years
The UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 may witness one of the lowest cut-offs in recent years after candidates and coaching experts described the General Studies Paper-I as unusually difficult, lengthy, and highly unpredictable. Multiple analyses suggest that the General category cut-off could fall to the 73–77 mark range, significantly lower than the 2025 cut-off of 92.66.
According to experts, the paper departed from recent trends and emphasized analytical thinking, conceptual clarity, and nuanced factual knowledge rather than straightforward current affairs or static questions. Even experienced aspirants reported difficulty in eliminating options and managing time effectively.
Recent estimates vary:
- Some experts place the General category cut-off around 73–77 marks.
- A survey-based analysis by VisionIAS estimates the cut-off at about 77.5 (±2) marks.
- Other analysts predict a range of 70–75 marks, citing the paper’s factual and unpredictable nature.
The expectation of a lower cut-off is reinforced by historical trends. In 2023, another difficult prelims examination saw the General category cut-off drop to 75.41 marks. Experts believe the 2026 paper was at least as challenging, and possibly tougher.
Adding weight to these assessments, Ajay Kumar recently acknowledged that the 2026 prelims paper was “tough and challenging” for many candidates.
However, candidates should remember that all current figures are unofficial estimates. The final cut-off will depend on factors such as the number of vacancies, candidate performance, CSAT qualification rates, and the final answer key. UPSC will release the official cut-off only after the entire Civil Services Examination cycle concludes.
